Discovering of America


Spices are very ordinary things today and we find them in every home. But along time ago spices were very expensive. There were many trips made to obtain spices. People wanted to become richer, and they looked for new places where they could get these expensive things. People thought that in India, there are many spices and because of that they looked for a route to India.
Columbus looked for a route too. Columbus was born in 1451 in busberg Genoa, Italy. He was the son of a wool-weaver. For first 22 years of his life he lived there. He gained his love for sailing from growing up in a town near a large seaport. Columbus became a map-maker and because of this he had to travel a lot. Columbus traveled to a lot of places before discovering America. For example Africa, England and Iceland.
Then Columbus attempted to go India . Columbus went to the king of Portugal to ask financial support. King John II refused, but Columbus was desperate and he went with his son Diego to the king of Spain. The kink and queen or Spain did agree to help him.
On August 3rd, 1492, he took 3 ships out from Polo. The main ship was Santa Maria which had 18 m long and 3 m deep. In Santa Maria there had 3 masts. It was a slow ship which was meant to bring back goods. It�s height was about 100 ft . Second ship was Pinta and the captain of this ship was M.A. Pizon. Pinta was a caravel, it�s height was 50-60 ft , it was smaller and faster than Santa Maria. Pinta was 17 m long and 2 m deep. It also had 3 masts. Third ship was Nina, the captain of this ship was U.A. Pinzon , Martins brother. The Nina was a caravel too, which weighed 50 -60 t. Nina had 4 masts, it was 15 long and 2 m deep. The speed of ships depended on speed of wind, Santa Maria was slowest and Pinta fastest ship.
In the ships there were about 120 man. There was quite bad living condition because water came in. Sea men hands were full of scratches . The men started to get diseases.
At the beginning of the trip the sea was quiet and the sun shined. The crew was in a good mood.. The ships rode to Kanar, an island, then they rode cross Atlantic Ocean
The ride lasted almost 2 months and the team wanted to go back, because the food was running out and they didnt see land. Then Columbus said, �we are going on until we run out of drinking water. Team understand that captain is living same cinditions as they and they were agree to go forward. Last days before 12th October were the hardest days. They didn�t have food and they only had a little bit water, but this didn�t give a lot of energy. There were a few fights, but they stayed calm, because they thought that they will get big treasure and spices and gold. With these thoughts they continued the ride.
At the 12th October, 1492 finally team saw land. Columbus and crew took boats and went to coast. Age-old people of this country were friendly and good, Columbus thought that he had discovered India and named those people Indians.
Indians were tall and around 30 years old. They had long ears, faces were red and skin over eyes was colored red or yellow. They were naked and the skin was over colored . Columbus gave them prizes. Indians gave prizes to Columbus too. Indians didn�t know iron and guns.
After while Columbus started his way to home. At the 2nd October they ride past to cuba. If they were riding to cuba then Pinta captain left with his ship. Someone had told him that is some kind of island called Barbque, and there is a lot of gold. Columbus and Nina continued ride to home, at the 5th September they made Haiti islands. But Santa maria drive to rocks and went down. Columbus made parts of Santa Maria little seaport LA Neveda.
Little Nina couldnt take all team to board and Columbus left about 40 men to wait them. Now Columbus sailed along whit Haiti East coast and they all were very surprised if they saw Pinta. Columbus was not mad to Pinta and they continued their trip to home togheter.

At the 14th February there was terrible storm. It was the worst storm of this trip. The waves was 3 m heigh. It was scary and a lot of men got sea sick. This storm seperated those ships again. Columbus ship made at 4th martch to spain and Queen and King was very happy. Pinta made to Spain little bit later.
